Product Manager ATS Keywords: The 50 Phrases Workday and Greenhouse Score Highest

PM resumes get filtered at higher rates than engineering resumes — because ATS keyword lists for product roles are vaguer and more dependent on company stage. Here are the 50 specific phrases that score highest in 2026.

Why PM resumes fail more ATS screens

For an engineer, "Python" or "Kubernetes" is unambiguous — either it's on the resume or it isn't. PM keywords are softer: "product strategy", "roadmap ownership", "stakeholder alignment." The ATS still scans for literal tokens, but PM JDs use a wider vocabulary, and recruiters configure required-skills lists differently across companies.

The result: a PM with strong outcomes will get filtered if the resume vocabulary doesn't match the JD vocabulary. The fix is to load specific PM phrases that overlap with how the requisition is written for the company stage you're targeting.

By company stage: which keywords matter

Early-stage / Series A-B PM

Startups want "builder" signals. Score high: 0-to-1, founder-mode, scrappy, end-to-end ownership, customer discovery, MVP, problem-solution fit, ICP, growth experiments, PMF. Drop the corporate-PM vocabulary — startups read "cross-functional alignment" as code for "slow."

Growth-stage PM (Series C+)

Mix of build and scale. Score high: scaling product, A/B testing, growth model, retention, activation, conversion funnel, north-star metric, instrumentation, product analytics, Mixpanel/Amplitude.

Enterprise / FAANG PM

Process and stakeholder vocab. Score high: cross-functional leadership, RACI, OKRs, quarterly planning, executive communication, GTM strategy, launch readiness, competitive analysis, market sizing, business case.

Outcome verbs that score higher than "owned"

ATS doesn't score verbs the same way it scores nouns. But recruiters reading post-filter weight strong verbs heavily. Replace generic "led" or "managed" with:

  • Drove $X revenue impact / Y% retention lift
  • Shipped N features adopted by M users
  • Defined the strategy for X product line
  • Launched Y in Z weeks ahead of plan
  • Scaled X from N to 10N users
  • Reduced churn by Y%, time-to-onboard from X to Y minutes
  • Validated the X hypothesis through N customer interviews

Common PM resume mistakes that fail ATS

  1. Buzzword salad without specifics. "Cross-functional product leader passionate about customer-centric outcomes" ranks below the same person writing "Led PMs across mobile + web; shipped onboarding redesign that lifted activation 32%."
  2. No specific tools. Saying "analytics platforms" is weaker than "Mixpanel, Amplitude, Looker." Even if you're generalist, list 2-3 specific tools you've used.
  3. Frameworks not named. If you've actually used RICE/MoSCoW/Kano, write it. ATS scores acronyms.
  4. No metric numbers. "Improved retention" vs "Improved D30 retention from 22% to 31%" — the second hits both keyword (D30, retention) and recruiter signal.
  5. Stage mismatch. An enterprise PM resume applied to an early-stage role gets filtered for missing "0-to-1" signals. And vice versa. Tailor by stage.

By function area: lead with the right keywords

  • Growth PM: activation, retention, A/B testing, funnel, conversion, paid acquisition, organic growth, North-star metric
  • Platform PM: APIs, developer experience, internal platforms, technical specs, system design, architecture
  • Consumer PM: user research, jobs-to-be-done, mobile, App Store/Play Console, app analytics, retention curves
  • B2B/Enterprise PM: RFP, contract negotiation, enterprise sales motion, customer success, churn, expansion, ARR/NDR
  • Data/ML PM: ML model deployment, data quality, feature engineering, model monitoring, MLOps, A/B testing for models

Validate against a specific job

Generic PM keyword lists won't tell you which 10-15 keywords the specific role you're applying to actually scores on. PM JDs vary widely by company.
