Workday ATS: The Exact Keywords It Scans For (By Role)

Workday powers about 45% of Fortune 500 hiring. Here's what its ATS weighs, what it ignores, and the specific keyword categories that matter for software, data, marketing, and operations roles in 2026.

Why Workday Matters More Than Other ATS

Workday is the most widely deployed enterprise ATS in the world. If you've applied to any of Amazon, Target, Netflix, Salesforce, Unilever, HSBC, or the US Federal government recently, your resume was parsed by Workday.

Unlike older ATS like Taleo, Workday uses relatively sophisticated text parsing — it handles most PDF and Word formats well. The challenge isn't format. The challenge is what Workday's scoring algorithm weighs and what it silently ignores.

How Workday Scores Resumes

Workday scoring has three main inputs:

  1. Required skills match — Skills listed in the job requisition that the recruiter flagged as "required." Missing 1 of these drops your score dramatically.
  2. Preferred skills match — Softer weight, but each match pushes you up the ranked list.
  3. Experience parsing — Workday extracts your job titles, companies, dates, and tries to match against the required years of experience. It does this by reading your "Work Experience" section, so the section name matters.

What Workday does not heavily weigh: your summary paragraph, project descriptions outside a formal job, and certifications unless they appear in a dedicated "Certifications" section.

Software Engineering Keywords

For software roles, Workday weighs specific tools and frameworks over abstract skills. "Full-stack developer" as a title counts for less than "React, Node.js, PostgreSQL" appearing as distinct skills.

High-weight 2026 keywords by specialization:

  • Frontend: React, Next.js, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, Redux, GraphQL, Jest, Cypress, Storybook, Figma-to-code
  • Backend: Node.js, Python, Go, Rust, Java, Spring Boot, FastAPI, PostgreSQL, Redis, Kafka, gRPC, REST API
  • DevOps: Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform, AWS (be specific: EKS, Lambda, S3, RDS), GCP, Azure, CI/CD, GitHub Actions, ArgoCD, Prometheus
  • Mobile: Swift, SwiftUI, Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, React Native, Expo, XCTest

Specificity wins. Writing "cloud infrastructure" scores lower than writing "AWS EKS, S3, Lambda" — even though they mean roughly the same thing.

Data / ML Engineering Keywords

  • Data Engineering: Apache Spark, dbt, Airflow, Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks, Kafka, SQL, Python, ETL pipelines, data warehouse, data lake
  • ML Engineering: PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn, MLflow, Weights & Biases, Hugging Face, LangChain, vector databases (Pinecone, Weaviate), model serving (Triton, BentoML)
  • Analytics: SQL, Tableau, Looker, Power BI, dbt, A/B testing, experimentation, cohort analysis

Workday is especially literal for data roles. If a JD says "Snowflake" and your resume says "cloud data warehouse," you score below a candidate who wrote "Snowflake."

Marketing Keywords

  • Performance Marketing: Google Ads, Meta Ads, LinkedIn Ads, TikTok Ads, CAC, LTV, ROAS, attribution, UTM, GA4, Amplitude
  • Content/SEO: SEO, on-page optimization, link building, keyword research, Ahrefs, Semrush, Google Search Console, schema markup, Core Web Vitals
  • Lifecycle/Email: Customer.io, Braze, Iterable, Klaviyo, HubSpot, segmentation, drip campaigns, cohort retention
  • Growth: experimentation, A/B testing, funnel analysis, activation rate, North Star metric

Marketing JDs often ask for platform experience by brand name. If the JD says "HubSpot," don't write "marketing automation platforms." Write "HubSpot."

Operations / Project Management Keywords

  • Program Management: Agile, Scrum, Kanban, Jira, Confluence, Asana, Monday.com, OKRs, stakeholder management, cross-functional
  • Supply Chain: SAP, Oracle, inventory management, S&OP, demand planning, procurement
  • Finance Ops: NetSuite, Workday Financials, Anaplan, FP&A, variance analysis, forecasting

The Section Header Trap

Workday looks for specific section names to parse your experience. Non-standard headers cause it to misclassify entire sections.

Safe: "Work Experience", "Professional Experience", "Employment History", "Skills", "Education", "Certifications"

Risky: "My Journey", "What I've Built", "Career Highlights", "Track Record"

If you use creative section names, Workday may parse your entire work history as "unclassified text" — which means the years-of-experience check silently fails.
